Belgrade Refugees, 2017
Belgrade Refugees, 2017

In the old halls of the Belgrade Central Station, a space that used to serve as depots for the trains and the customs, around a thousand refugees live at temperatures far below freezing point. Their way to Europe via Hungary is blocked. The living conditions in the unofficial camps are inhumane. The sanitary conditions are very poor and there is no running water. Most of the primarily young men come from Afghanistan.

In the self-built and precarious fireplaces, a lot of wood is burned. The remains of old railway tracks are used for this purpose and they inevitably release toxic gases during combustion. The inhalation of those toxic fine particules often leads to lung diseases and many refugees suffer on top of that from frostbite.

This project won the Kolga Newcomer Award 2019.
