He made his first 8mm films as a teenager. With his cinema debut „Die Abfahrer“, a tragicomic story from the Ruhr region, he won the German Film Award in Silver. Other bitterly realistic films about the Ruhr region followed. His early success got him a professorship for film in Dortmund at the age of 29. His commissioned permanent exhibition „Flying Pictures“ characterises the city landmark of Dortmund, the „Dortmunder U“.
